Organization: International Voluntary Service
Country: Mozambique
Closing date: 31 Mar 2018

Friends of Quelimane is a project with the main objective of helping people from Quelimane to learn English or improve their English language skills. Given the geographical and cultural isolation of Zambezia, this is very important. Having good English-speaking skills would allow the locals to have access to more and better-paid jobs. It would also educate them on world issues outside of their country giving them a greater feeling of connection. IVS volunteers will play a crucial and pioneering role in this sense, offering to a large and different public the opportunity of learning English from a native speaker. The project has been conceived by the local partners together with IVS and it aims at addressing the needs of a variety of organisations, most of them providing assistance to people with fewer opportunities.

The project includes a variety of activities for the volunteers in different partner organisations including schools and orphanages. Each volunteer is expected to deliver English classes at each location, at different times throughout the day, to allow a wider participation. The students are mainly children/teenagers with fewer opportunities, inmates or individuals with criminal convictions and local English teachers who wish to improve their knowledge.

Where classes of basic English are already offered, the volunteers will complement the current courses with an intermediate course and perhaps (depending on the demand) an advanced course. In addition, the volunteers will be involved in organising, coordinating, and implementing other activities, such as theatre and debates in English which will widely depend on the volunteer’s skills and interests.

In all contexts, the volunteers are expected to be able to build and implement a coherent and progressive curriculum.

Additional Information:
IVS is recruiting two volunteers who are preferably based in the UK for this project. The ideal candidate is someone with previous experience as an English teacher (even better if with children/teenagers), with a strong motivation to help other people. The volunteers should be flexible in organising his/her work according to the different needs encountered, have the capacity to adapt to a very different social and cultural context, and be interested in discovering a new culture. Other skills and interests (such as sport, music, drama, arts, etc.) are welcome. The volunteers must be over 18.
Project duration: Minimum of 6 months
Project cost: £1,258
