The volunteer's role

The overall purpose of this placement is to support the capacity building of faculty, students and hospital staff in midwifery practice as part of a 5-year Ethiopia RMNCH Program Plan. Ultimately, this position will work to reduce maternal and child mortality, strengthen the quality of RMNCH services and to build institutional capacity to deliver these services.

The volunteer will have to conduct the following activities:

  1. Assessing current midwifery practice (both pre-service and in-service) and co-identifying priorities for the institution and for community outreach.
  2. Coaching/mentoring of faculty/staff/students in clinical practice (i.e. d/t procedures) at skill lab and at health facility sites.
  3. Preparing, co-facilitating/leading, and conducting follow-up to experience sharing initiatives rooted in evidence-based research.
  4. Conducting/advising research on RMNCH (literature reviews, collecting and analysing data, writing journal articles, etc.).
  5. Integrating gender mainstreaming and social inclusion priorities into all work conducted.

Essential Academic Qualifications:

  • Licenced midwife with experience in clinical practice
  • Experience in conducting workshops, trainings and seminars on RMNCH specific topics (i.e. family planning, HIV/AIDS, etc.).

Essential Professional Background/Competencies:

  • Teamwork, with the ability to work collaboratively in diverse groups.
  • Ability to work in an institutional environment, hospital and health facility settings and in the community.
  • Cross-cultural experience in coaching/mentoring and training.

Desirable Academic Qualifications:

  • Master's in related field
  • Experience with collaborative research and advising on research in RMNCH sector

Desirable Professional Background/Competencies:

  • Experience with community outreach.
  • Experience working in remote regions in Canada or abroad.
  • Previous working experience in developing country context.

Important information for candidates

Cuso International covers the majority of the $29,000 cost of being an overseas volunteer, including:

• Travel and accommodation for the five-day pre-departure training course and in-country training orientation
• Return airfare and visa/permit costs
• The cost of required vaccinations, anti-malarials and health insurance
• Access to Employee Assistance program while overseas and upon return
• Accommodation while overseas
• Modest living allowance while overseas
• Modest support for accompanying partners and dependents going on placement with you for 12 months or longer
• Travel and accommodation for reintegration debriefing weekend

Fundraising: We ask each volunteer, regardless of placement length, to raise $2,000. All volunteers receive support from Cuso International to help achieve the goal through fundraising. If the volunteer chooses not to fundraise or is unable to achieve the fundraising goal, he/she can make a one-time donation or become a monthly donor to support our work.

• E-volunteering: Depending on the nature of the placement, the volunteer might be required to provide e-volunteering support to the local partner or Cuso International before or after the field placement.
