Mozambique: Research Manager

The Research Manager will work closely with the SI Unit Manger to support the implementation of all ICAP-Mozambique research related studies and program evaluations. The Research Manager will have primary responsibility for the implementation of research related activities.

This position is grant funded.

Location: Maputo, Mozambique

Major Accountabilities

  • Technical oversight and day-to-day management of the study implementations, including development and adherence to study operating procedures (SOPs), ethics, data security procedures, policies, and study work planning and logistics.
  • Manage project administration including preparation of work plans, budgets/reforecast updates, narrative and financial reports in collaboration with the SI Unit Manager.
  • Develop all study documents and tools in collaboration with the Research field coordinator and Primary Research Team, ensure strong and timely execution of study’s implementation plan, and implement systems for strengthening operations and field efficiencies.
  • Oversee and coordinate the procurement of study-related supplies.
  • Collaborate with Primary Research Team to regularly present results of study to a variety of audiences and key stakeholders.
  • Collaborate closely on a daily basis with technical level of government and other implementing partners, at national and regional level, to ensure the study is informed by other activities and preliminary study findings are shared in all relevant forums.
  • Perform routine monitoring and field supervision visits of study related activities in the field.
  • Maintain regular communication with Principal investigator and co-investigators about study achievements.
  • Elaborate study monthly and quarterly progress reports as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Travel Requirements

  • Travel (up to 50%) within Mozambique may be required.

Education

  • Degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, or related field.
  • Clinical experience preferred.

Experience, Skills & Minimum Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant experience of which at least two (2) years of proven success in coordinating complex research projects.
  • Experience in HIV and/or Public Health related research is preferred.
  • Experience conducting research activities in a developing country, including understanding of Institutional Review Board (IRB) and national Ethics Committee processes and procedures.
  • Exceptional relationship building and interpersonal skills, and an ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of partners and stakeholders in a culturally diverse environment.
  • Highly developed strategic analysis, problem solving, and quantitative skills with ability to create tools to address specific challenges and improve working practices.
  • Strong project management (including of Human Resources) skills, including demonstrated ability to think independently, be flexible, and balance multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
  • Ability to use computer statistical software programs such as SPSS, SAS, STATA, or R.
  • Excellent Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point skills, with the ability to develop compelling presentations.
  • Excellent (fluent) Portuguese written and verbal communication skills. Fluent in English (written and writing).
