Context
APOPO is an award-winning global non-profit organization that researches and deploys scent detection technology using trained giant African pouched rats to address global social issues, namely to detect landmines and tuberculosis (TB). APOPO’s headquarters and training and research center is situated in Tanzania and works in close partnership with the Sokoine University of Agriculture in Morogoro.

Role
APOPO is currently seeking an inquisitive and motivated Program Manager to lead the TB Operations in Mozambique and lead a team of 17 motivated staff members and a team of trained TB detection rats.
The profile we look for:
Holds a relevant university degree (MSc or equivalent) in biomedical sciences, medicine or a related field. A PhD in biomedical sciences is desired. Candidates with in-country experience in a similar position are strongly encouraged to apply.
Has a minimum of 5-years field experience in health care and development operations and demonstrated project management and team leading experience;
Has research experience and an active professional network in the field of TB diagnostics;
Speaks and writes Portuguese and English fluently;
Is enthusiastic about APOPO’s TB detection rats and familiar (or ready to quickly familiarize himself / herself) with their research use in the field. Prior experience in working with or keeping animals is an asset.
The successful candidate will work in Maputo, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the Eduardo Mondlane University and will report to APOPO’s Head of TB who is based in Tanzania.
Key responsibilities
Develop and implement APOPO’s TB operations strategy in Mozambique
Ø Develop and document strategies and an implementation plan for the TB operation program in Mozambique in line with APOPO’s strategic goals;
Ø Actively engage in the search for funding for operations; Ø Coordinate and strengthen the TB operations in Mozambique;
Promote APOPO’s TB detection activities
Ø Raise APOPO’s profile with the TB stakeholders in Mozambique;
Ø Strengthen the existing networks with central and local authorities and liaise with new local partners and stakeholders;
Ø Ensure appropriate documentation of operational activities and regular reporting to the national authorities;
Ø Present APOPO’s work and concepts at conferences, workshops and other relevant fora;
Ø Contribute to the publication of operational results in scientific journals; Ø Liaise with current and potential stakeholders, operational partners and donors.
Manage APOPO’s TB project in Mozambique
Ø Lead the staff members who are working for the program;
Ø Manage the administrative and logistic aspects including budget of the project, in line with APOPO policies and procedures;
Ø Recruit, contract and train an adequate HR capacity;
Ø Implement and fine tune tools, methodology and training modules for staff, including APOPO SOP’s. Ø Monitor and improve TB diagnostic activities and patients’ linkage to care.
Contribute to the ongoing TB diagnostic research
Ø Identify research opportunities in collaboration with the management team and with stakeholders;
Ø Assist in the writing of research proposals as agreed by the management team and in close collaboration with specific researchers involved; Ø Scientifically evaluate data generated by the project.
Be an active member of the APOPO management team
Ø Write and submit regular progress reports to headquarters
Ø Report any relevant information about the project and stakeholders;
Ø Participate in the TB departments’ and management meetings;
Ø Provide input to the communications team in support of the website or general communications;
Ø Assist other APOPO projects when appropriate.
