Head of Project "Emergency Response" (m/f)

in Borena, Ethiopia

The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with a contract duration of 8 months. There are good prospects for an extension. The place of work will be Borena (Yabello), Ethiopia. Taking the security situation into account, travel for work will be required.

The aims of the position are to co-manage and co-implement the Drought Emergency Response Project together with the local partner in Borena on the basis of specified directives in terms of content, schedule and budget. The project is carried out in accordance with Welthungerhilfe standards and the directives/provisions of the co-financer (or the donor).

As Head of Project you are responsible to give guidance and support for the partner and assure the operative implementation of the project and the appropriate use of funds. Furthermore you are responsible for coordination, planning and implementation, correctly and duly reporting to Welthungerhilfe's regional office.

Your responsibilities

  • Assist the partner to carry out the project according to the co-financing agreement and Welthungerhilfe's standards for the implementation of projects
  • In consultation with the partner modify and continue project planning and the project budget
  • Observe internal or external procurement directives when purchases are made locally by the partner
  • Assist the partner in preparing and/or examining distribution reports
  • Prepare status reports according to Welthungerhilfe standards or the rules of donors
  • Bring the project to an orderly conclusion
  • Assure security of expatriate staff and national staff involved in the project and for the implementation of the security plan
  • Prepare and supervise visits (journalists, staff from Head Office, representatives of co-financers, etc.)

Your profile

  • Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Disaster Management, Humanitarian Assistance or other relevant qualification
  • Several years of project and management experience in the planning and supervision of emergency aid measures of international (aid) organisations, preferably in the region
  • Experience in working with national partner organisations
  • Coordination and organisational skills, including ability to work under considerable pressure
  • A high level of mental and physical resilience and readiness to travel to areas with volatile local conditions

  • Intercultural competence

  • A very good level of written and spoken English, knowledge of local language (Borena Oromiffa) will be an added value
